Modern day South African food is a real mix and match. With influences from a number of continents as well as its own indigenous cookery styles. Most of the food you'll find in the restaurants serving up a traditional South African platter is what is known today as "cape dutch". This consists of a combination of the cuisines introduced by the colonists and the spicy cookery which the slaves from the East brought with them. These days on the streets of South Africa you'll find many fast food outlets, the majority of which are homegrown. There are also plenty of other food styles on offer such as Japanese, Chinese and European to name but a few.
Seafood also figures heavily in the modern South African diet. Some of the fish dishes on offer are truly wondrous. the South African rock lobster is a particularly sweet variety and why not try a snoek which is a pickled fish. Tastes better than it sounds. |
