The nineteenth century brought with it abundance in the discovery of diamonds and gold. This gave the white colonizers huge power and the indigenous people were left with less than nothing. Officially however apartheid did not begin until 1948. The ANC was banned, Mandela was imprisoned for 30 years.
Only in very recent history has apartheid been outlawed and against all odds Nelson Mandela became president of the country which he fought for all those years ago.
The country still has it's problems but is in a more stable position now than ever before. Business is booming, tourism is up and there are a new generation of South Africans embracing their freedom.
Capitalism, it seems, wins again. |
